5 Start-ups who are doing much more than just business!

The festivities have been in the air. This time of the year brings joyous and happy vibes around as people get to meet their loved ones and celebrate together. But Diwali leaves a looming void around giving us enough time to ponder on serious issues. Although the air quality has been making headlines from quite some days, it is now that when the celebrations have ended the gravity of the issue sinks in.

Delhi- our very own national capital has been experiencing “poor” air quality from five consecutive days and is expected to have an even poor air quality post-Diwali. With celebrations in the air comes the harmful pollutants each year. Diwali has successfully been making headlines from last decade or so as air quality plummets each year post-Diwali- mainly affecting North Indian cities.

Even the most ignorant of us are aware about the environment protection talks and the hype it has created. Each year headlines are written, bans are drawn on fireworks but the air quality deteriorates nonetheless. More so, firecrackers are not even the major contributor to air pollution. But combined with the effect of crop stubble burning , vehicular emissions and winds moving east, Delhi experiences smog and steep fall in its air quality.

Thanks to the increasing awareness for environment protection, citizens are now more concerned about the health issues poor air quality can cause. Entrepreneurs are quick to sight an opportunity as they did in this case. Poor air quality and growing concern for the same has made space for a pollution reduction industry.

Many startups have emerged in this space by developing innovative technologies , solutions or aids to help combat air pollution in India or atleast reduce its effects.

Here is a list of five such start ups who are working on the change:

AURRASURE

Aurrasure is an initiative by Phoenix Robotics — an Odisha based tech startup. This provides a multipoint monitoring system to help monitor the air quality. Government, corporates and even city corporations can benefit from such monitoring systems.These authorities can monitor the air quality in different areas and use the information to control before its too late.

Aurrasure’s monitoring system not only tells you the air quality index but also helps explain the micro factors leading to environmental changes. Its wireless sensor networks (WSN) and Industrial Internet of things(IIoT) collects data from different sources like public spaces, residential areas, traffic lights and parks among others.

It provides real time information making it a reliable and valuable source.

2. AirOK

AirOK is an idea incubated in one of India’s premier institutes- IIT Madras. It started as an air quality product and services company targeting not only residential areas but industrial as well. AirOK made its mission to provide quality air sensors that helps people to know relevant insights about the kind of air people they are inhaling.

Knowing air quality is not enough , unless we can do something to make it better. This is why AirOK also provides air purifiers to release harmful pollutants like microbes from the air. The founders — Deekshith Vara Prasad, Pavan Reddy Yasa, Sravan Krishna wanted to curb growing rate of respiratory problems .

Among other things AirOk also offers products like face masks, purifying bags, C02 air purifiers, pollution seizures and data center solutions.

3. NIRVANA BEING

Nirvana Being is a Delhi based startup aiming to provide end to end solutions for air pollution problems. Are you a fashion enthusiast but want to buy sustainable products. Then this is the startup for audience like you. This startup combines fashion with health and environment. Its offers fashionable products which are sustainable and protective.

Nirvana Being started out in 2018 with an opportunity to fuse fashion with environment sustainability. Jaidhar Gupta, the founder, used his technological background to tap into this market.

They started out as a mask selling startup but gradually moved on to a variety of products like Vogmask (multilayered masked offered in single and double valve), Laser Egg (smart air quality monitor), PuraCar (car air purifier), Airgle (room air purifier) and more.

4. CLAIRC0

Air purifiers are still considered a luxury in India. Most of our population is middle class and hesitates to invest in products like these. Here, Clairco comes with a middle way. Even though air purifiers are rarely found in Indian homes, air conditioners relatively very common. Clairco provides low drag air quality filters which can be used attached in air conditioners .Adaptable to any style they serve as a much more convenient way.

Clairco was founded in 2018 in Bengaluru with a vision to solve the menace of indoor air pollution. It founded an in house technology to filter indoor air.

It has successfully made its names in some of India’s most well-known health and fitness companies. And much like other startups, Clairco also provides real time air quality data and contextual reports.

5. ONMASK LIFE SCIENCES

With startups providing real time information and purifying technology, this startup started basic. It pointed the most basic protection available and gave their own flavour to it.

OnMask Life Sciences as the name suggests provides air protection masks. Our very first indigenious firm to produce reusable, washable and comfortable anti pollution mask has come a long way. Its owner Satya Krishna Ganni started on this idea in 2012. We are all now tired and yet very familiar with face masks, thanks to covid but face masks were a lesser used product when Satya started. He aimed at providing more durable and yet more protective face masks.

Aside from face masks for consumers, it also provides respiratory protection devices for construction, oil and gas, manufacturing, and healthcare, among other industries.
